"Note: Elite henning won the competition that month"

When you think about it, it's not really a contest: anyone who is truely skilled will always be voted above the gallery flooders. The gallery flooders only get voted "elite" when they are pitted against other gallery flooders.

And so the cycle continues...

You recieve more contructive help when you are not elite anyway (mostly, when elite, you'll just get pointless ohh's and ahh's wether it's great or not) so thats more an incentive (for me anyway) to keep finished artwork on the hard drive and post one now and then :)

Not true. I can think of a very recent example that contradicts that statement...

PS I like drunken wallace posts BUT he is too knew in the game and well he hasn't been here long enough to earn the elite stat
thats just my opinion
Henning deserves it
he always puts out quality work hes not a vote whore he doesn't PM people begging for votes and you will never catch him the say what begging
like many people here do.
unacceptable in my eyes
the other guy PJClapp yes new... but again same thing he is not a whore
puts out quality works and they are very unique you cant beat that.
hip hip hurrah for them!
also you know Andy took all his art works down?
WTF man... I love the guy to death I think maybe the elite thing got to him?
I really do think we should give him the platinum icon only cause hes special like ride short bus special

thank you very much now my blood pressure is up again now I need a nitro pill.....

just for kicks... the voting for elite needs to be worked out
maybe have a selected few who GFX can depend on
they will judge who gets in
you let regular members do it they will vote for their friends.
no nominations 'just judges'
the judges who are regulars here will pic 10 favs
then from there like Martin or all judges can pic one person per category
bing bang BOOM
need help finding people you can depend on people who will be brutally honest? leave it me I will find them and ask them my self.

I really have to stop thinking about this cause its out of my hands and it gets me teed off and no matter what I say or do or think nothing will be done..
so I need to count to 10 and walk away from this blog cause I could be here all day VENTING!

CRAP one more thing bring back arenhaus
he will weed out all the people who don't belong
BAM if they cant take it they will fail and leave the site.
if they can take it they will get better and then maybe just maybe improve and deserve that gold jacket
please make it stop........... thats it im turning off my PC
I hope you are happy!

just my 2 cents to the elite topic:

first -
any art/design community that deals with an elite like status has to accept several losses.. there will always be: begging for votes, spamming "artworks", vip voting and in some cases copying other's art. this is not directly a problem of gfx but of the people all around the globe.

second-
you cant bring the elite status to a fair level. on gfx you can be sure to find at least technical advanced stuff in the elites gallery.. polished stuff.. glamorous paintings.. but you can be shure that there will never exist an expressionist or some other kind of painter that doesnt follow en vogue style.
it's just all about masses.. like marketing.
btw: i dont want to decrease the value of our elites nor their work!

"what 2 posts don't belong there??"

I'm guessing you mean AlmostHuman's pic and Cigaro's drawing...

I know you have a thing for her work/popularity (saw it on your homepage)

They are both victims of what I stated in a blog... over time vote total is irrelavent as 1 vote of 10 = 10 votes of 1 Those with more exposure will get more points.

Overtime either of those votes could be the #1 highest ever with the current system.

Oops forgot to mention that this wasn't about the actual artists but the nominations and how the nomination system is flawed in respect to obtaining the required point total.

you know... I know I will get some slack for saying what I said... but I know I cant be the only one thinking any of this
and sometimes I say things the wrong way...when typing it
I express my self better verbally and with my hands lol
I just look back at the old G-spot days... I mean look at the quality
and look at it today
maybe I just miss the old days maybe I miss the old school members that don't post any more..
and I will have to live with the changes..
and live with what I said...
but I needed to get that off my chest its been bugging me for some time..
and I know half of the stuff I said didn't have anything to do with your blog
I just went off!
sorry about that..

No worries ;)

I agree with alot of it, sometimes I get fustrated as I don't want to let it out to the members as it looks bad for the mod team.

I've noticed alot of GFX ol skoolers aren't posting at CGTalk either anymore..

Gotta agree totally with WYSIWYG here - the elite nomination system seems to be badly flawed. Someone gunning for a nomination would be best saving up their artwork and posting it all in a 1 month period - even average work would be likely to attract a nomination. Conversely a trully excellent artist who may be only able to post once every couple of months but whose work was exceptional wouldn't be in with a look-in.

How about this for the basis of an alternative system...
Take into account the last ,(pick a number), 12 pieces of artwork by an artist - irrespective of the time span taken to post them.
Ignore the, (pick a number), 3 lowest scoring pieces, (so artists aren't afraid to try something different that might not meet with mass approval), and base the points score on that.
In addition in order to qualify for nomination at least one new piece must be added that month - so if an artist has stopped submitting work they don't keep getting nominated anyway.
So it's a 'rolling' 12 pieces.

This would also help with another problem i see -
take (for eg - and i havn't checked the numbers so please don't trip me up on that bit) the photo-manip category where there are fewer submissions than for other categories. In order to be nominated at present at least 2 other very active photo-manipers have to be active too - you could be a total genius at it but if the 'competition' isn't there you won't get nominated. With a 'rolling' system other artists in the same category will eventually amass sufficient points to generate nominations. (err i think...)

It would mean that elite nominations would be based on the quality of their work and not the quantity that they can post in any given month...

The current system is about as unfair as it gets, on most levels. Not that we should even have elite members anyway, it's almost facist sounding, kind of like saying one is an "elite person"

Unless you're absolutly fantastic at everything and have no room for improvement (which everyone does) how can anyone be considered "elite" it's rediculous and childish.

Piss poor really.

This is a thread about the elite nominations.. I agree with all the points mentioned. But what has my Image got to do with this?
I have never been "up for elite"
Im in the gspot, granted, but that is as a result of people visiting my image, I give a lot of time and try to be honest with my crits, in fact I believe in the photographic section, only carlos has posted on more images than myself during my membership.. I can continue, but at this point will hold back...
I love you all even Brandon, who I thought was Satan once ! ;)
As for the nominations, the flooding, which I cant be accused of, has resulted in a number of half baked artists going into elite. but overall as a system it works for now and the ^ limit shoudl fine tune it further..
Andy should have a platinium Jacket. Juro Should be given a fetching yak herder hat and Brett, I will have to get back to you, maybe a flack jacked.
One Final Point.. DID YOU ALL VOTE ON MY WORK? ;)
Take Care and keep up the good work...
