Description

"Sleep soundly princess, I'll watch over you...."

"I'm always watching you"

Yes this is not something most would expect from cheery ol' me. But it was inspired by a few songs, and I'm always intrigued with cases of extreme emotion. Here it's 'love'. Yes a sick, twisted love.

No references used. Well, I stared at my right hand alot and opted not to take a photo...(which sucked because I'm left handed!) The rest was from my head. This piece was about playing with cloth and light again, texture, more tablet practice....and to FINALLY prove I can draw hands (see My Wife the Assassin ). By the way my nails aren't that chewed up and dirty :p I made up my own texture for skin, PM me and I'll tell you how.

This piece is dedicated to GFXartist sponsor CityRose, GFXartist sponsor kittyKat,Elite, GFXartist sponsor ARTOONATOR, and
GFXartist sponsor MsMichelleLynn for really pushing me when I was down in the dumps last week.

And thanks to  thienbao for inspiring me to try and create a texture for skin.
Photoshop CS, 15 hours (half the time!)

Please check the links to alternate versions below, alot of detail was lost in the resizing for posting.

Thanks Brett. I like this one because of the concept and the mood. It's good you did this in bl/wh. I won't start on the anatomy of the girl, I think it comes out as a style here, and it suits the image because there is an overall unity here.

Awesome!! very creepy, yet titled "Guardian Angel". Heh heh!

i can't really see the texture, probalbly cause of my comp., but if i can see a zoom, it'd be great. I'd really like to see what you came up with. Oh, and you're welcome!

OMG, having grown up during the days of old b&w television, you did a great job of capturing the fuzzy looking screen and the haloing on the edges. A little too frightening from a young'un like you. lol
The hands are great, nice detail. And stop chewing the nails, they grow to be pretty and dainty. :)
sorry, for that comment, KittyKat made me say it.
Nice to see more of your work, Brett. Keep it coming

+ Very original and well conceived, the contrast works well. - The woman looks stiff, uncomfortable when she should be more relaxed, sinking into the pillow.

Woah, nice work Brett! And thank you for the lovely comment. ^_^ You're very welcome!

The strongest points in this pic would have to be the mood (very creepy and dynamic), the hands and the tv effect. Lovely work with the texture- I checked out the big version. Great work!
I think the only things that could be improved is the girl (a couple little anatomy problems, mainly with how she's posed, I think) and the lighting on the bedhead (I don't really know what makes it look off though). Besides that, I think this is a really well done and thoughtful piece!

You're good at telling stories Brett- use that to your advantage!
And for goodness sakes, next time you see Sarah, give her a big ol' hug. She sounds like an absolute sweetie. Lol
Keep up the great work! ^_^

I saw this in your work in progress and have to say it looks brilliant now.I wasn't quite sure how it would turn out but its got a great atmosphere. I love the way that teddy bear is looking...as if he can see back through the telly.

Great concept, would be great if I could photograph my dreams and use them as reference.

p.s. sorry about the Spider-Man thing mate, I didn't realise you were gonna do one too.I hate it when that happens hahah.Anyway plenty of room for Spidey, and I'm sure yours will be totally different take on it than mine. Can't wait.

I find it difficult to critique it, but I guess a slight reflection of the person who is watching her on the screen might have added even more to this piece.

 02/03/05 @605

Wonderful idea Brett :)
Her anatomy is a bit off - you might want to look at references until you get the hang out of certain body twists - it's not an easy pose to draw either imo.

You know what caught my eye the most? The Teddy - that little bugger looks awesome

Reflection in the glass... GREAT IDEA! mmmmm...might post an edit soon.

Avatar keiiii

 02/03/05 @894

Great concept! The hands are awesome. I also like how you made the on-screen image a little distorted.

I agree about the female's anatomy. Aside from looking at references, I think you could get a good idea of what the pose should look like if you actually try it out just before drawing it. For example, you will find that when you are slightly curled up like that, it feels much more natural to have your shoulders close to your face. Also, if you're not already doing this, keep a track of the important structures such as the spine, the ribcage and the hip bones. I find it very helpful.

Another thing... outside of the screen it seems underdetailed. It's not the most important part of the picture or anything, but I'd like to see more than just solid black. :) Something to indicate that this is a monitor would be nice -- I didn't know it was supposed to be one before reading the description.

Speaking of monitors, the gap between the scanlines is too wide. ...Okay, I'm just nitpicking. This is great stuff -- can't wait to see the edit, if you do one

The disortion through TV on the one hand creates a great effect, but on the other hand, it really reduces the detail you put into it, even without resizing. It works, but for that I don't really like it.
Also, the glow you added doesn't really work here, I'm not really sure why, I guess the shapes of the TV doesn't match the shapes of the glow and additionally to that, where should be a different lighting because of the frame a TV usually is in.
This is even more confusing as the hands also grab like there were no frame. Correct me if I'm wrong but I can't remember any TV without a frame around it.
On your drawing itself - it's awesome :) Hands are great, the character itself has an interesting style, my only crit here is maybe that you could have put a bit more effort into the hair, it looks a bit unfinished to me. Of course, this also goes for other parts (shoulder, where are her hands?) but I think, for the hair it's most important.

PS: forgot to read the other crits so sorry if I critted something that has already been mentioned :)

Thank you everyone for the constructive comments, everyone had some valid points that I will most likely apply to the next piece I do, rather than an edit of this (b/c mainly I'm just that lazy :p)

I know there were some anatomy issues...the problems of not having a reference, and her face in truth came out with a bit more of an 'anime' feel than I was looking for (none whatsoever. :) )

Really love the concept and the composition for this work! I just simply love that hovering hand on the screen. There is slight issue with the female pose and it doesn't look as realistic as the hand but I've seen that this part has been covered by some of the commentor.

5/5. I wish I can give more. :)
